Involve Me and I Learn

 

I have to physically go through the motions to really learn something.

Don’t tell me what the apple tv password is.  I will forget it.  Don’t try and explain to me how to re set the Wifi and expect me to remember the next time it acts up. I will text you asking again.. 

If you want me to learn how to do something, I have to do it for myself; and not just once but multiple times until it becomes automatic.  

I know this.
I am a Physical Therapist.

I am wired to move and I use this principle every day with my clients.

The Year of Moving Forward..

 

My word this year was MOVE.


Really, it has been my word for the last 3 years, It just took me 2 years to take action. 


I was challenged back in the spring of 2017 at a women’s conference to write one word on a rock that signified my next step and to place in on an altar. I didn’t understand it at the time , but it was echoing loud and clear in my mind.


MOVE.


So I wrote it.  I placed it.Then over the next year, I did it.

How to Find JOY When You Don’t Feel It

 

When you think about your childhood Christmases what memories come to mind?

What FEELINGS are triggered?

For me it was our TRADITIONS.  The things I came to expect because we did them year after year.

Looking back I realize how fortunate I was.

I may have grown up in a modest 1250 sq. ft. home, but the one thing my parents did that I have tried to continue for my children is the way they safeguarded Christmas for us.

Who Told Our Generation of Women that ZOOMIES were a Good Thing?

When my dog was a puppy, if he was in the kennel too long, he would get a case of what my dog breading sister called “the ZOOMIES.”

One minute he was sitting calmly at my side letting me rub his belly, and the next he turned into a canine lunatic.

The bottom floor of my home was converted into a race track, and he would sprint in repetitive circles, letting nothing slow his pace,  leaping up and over the couches to continue on his course.

We learned there was nothing stopping him when he got like this, and the best thing we could do was get out of his way and wait for him to exhaust himself.

When the Mountain That Needs to Move is Me

 

I first saw him the morning after we moved in to our new house.

He paused when I greeted him.

Like a turtle poking his head out of his shell with caution , his eyes eventually came around to meet mine in an effort to see who had spoken. I guessed his Asian origins and wondered what his story was. A longing arose to know how his steps had landed him in south Huntsville, Alabama.
I have yet to cross the road again and ask him….

When You are TIRED of Doing it ALONE

Last week I sat and listened as a young mom shared what she had been doing to encourage her 5 month old son to roll over.

She said,” He just doesn’t seem to be motivated. He is content to just lay there.

She shared how he would grasp toys that were overhead, but she could not get him to reach across midline to get them.
As I begin working with him, presenting the toy to his hand and guiding him to follow it, I noticed what I see often;

There comes a point when we decide the work is just not worth the effort.
